1967
Shindig Magazine, 2012 | The Gibb family set sail aboard The SS Fairsky bound for England. On board. The Bee Gees regularly perform and spend much of their down time writing songs for their next album. | 3 de janeiro de 1967 |
Shindig Magazine, 2012 | The brothers Gibb arrive at Southampton, England. Barry later tells the Los Angeles Times. “We signed one week after we arrived in England with Robert Stigwood. He had heard tapes, which we sent to him from Australia. Before we went to see him, we went to the organisation that handles The Seekers (another Australian group). They threw us out and painted a very black picture. Said there were too many groups around and that it was impossible. So we thought, “That’s fine”, we were glad we were told that because it made us work. Within a week, Robert called and we signed with him for five years.”Robin: “We arrived flat broke. We were sleeping in an unfurnished house somewhere in Hendon, which is a suburb of North London. We had the spirits and hopes of young teenagers and my mother and father were actually pulling their hair out. Stigwood had been trying to contact us through Polydor: they found out we were in the country and somehow located us to this house in North London. And Robert came on the phone and said, “Now, look i’ve heard these tapes and I want to do business with you guys. Wherever you are, just come on in.” | 7 de fevereiro 1967 |
Rockmine Almanac | The Bee Gees arrive at Southampton docks having left England for Australia nearly nine years ago. They spend their first night back in England in a down at heel hotel in Hampstead, London. | 7 de fevereiro de 1967 |
Rockmine Almanac | The Bee Gees sign a contract with Polydor Records that will make them millionaires less than three weeks after arriving back in Britain with only a few hundred pounds between them. Before leaving Australia, they’d sent a demo acetate to Brian Epstein at NEMS. Brian was too busy with The Beatles and gave the demo to his partner, Robert Stigwood. Stigwood tracked the group down to a rented house in Hendon only days after they’d settled in. Having contacted them, he interviewed them at his office, auditioned them at London’s Saville Theatre and offered them a management contract the next morning. | 24 de fevereiro de 1967 |
Shindig Magazine, 2012 | The New Musical Express runs and ad for The Bee Gees’ first British release. “Spicks and Specks”. Pictured are the brothers Gibb with drmmer Colin Peterson. (por entrevista depois …) | 25 de fevereiro de 1967 |
Shindig Magazine, 2012 | The NME reviews ” Spicks and Specks” calling it “a bit dated” but still thinking it “very good indeed”. RObin is given special mention for his vocal on hte flipside, “I am The World”. Also today, The Bee Gees tape backing vocals for a recording of their “Town Of Tuxley Toymaker” by another of Robert Stigwood’s charges, Billy J Kramer (recording for Robert’s Reaction label). | 4 de março de 1967 |

Today they tape 13 takes of an early rendition of “New York Mining Disaster 1941”, seven takes of “I Can’t See Nobody”. five takes of “Red Chair Fade Away” and seven takes of “Turn Of The Century”. | 7 de março de 1967 |
Shindig Magazine, 2012 | Sessions continue with seven takes of “House Of Lords” and 10 takes of “Mr. Waller’s Wailing Wall”. However, both songs will be reworked in the studio next monthBarry: “It was out infatuation with The Goons and that humour. “Mr Waller’s Wailing Wall” was right up that alley. It’s just silliness. I was, “How absurd can our lyrics become and still have people say oh, i like that song?” | 8 de março de 1967 |
Shindig Magazine, 2012 | At IBC, three more prospective album tracks are commited to tape. Two Australian members of the group have been ordered to leave Britain by the middle of September. Rockmine Almanac | 19 year old telephonist, Deirdre Meehan, arrives outside Buckingham Palace at 3.30 p.m. and proceeds to chain herself to the railings. She then tells onlookers that she doesn’t have a key for the set of handcuffs that she’s used. After 20 minutes standing in the rain, a police van pulls up and she’s quickly released before being ordered home. Deirdre and her 20 year old flat mate, Pat Cameron, have just returned from delivering a letter of protest to Prime Minister Harold Wilson while he was holidaying on the Isles Of Scilly.
